A conversation may begin with a wish to help and end in mutual blame. One person feels powerless, another takes control, and a third becomes angry about ingratitude. The roles change while the original problem remains.
The Karpman Drama Triangle is a transactional-analysis model proposed by Stephen Karpman in 1968. Victim, Persecutor, and Rescuer describe temporary positions in an interaction, not personality types or diagnoses.
What the Drama Triangle describes
The model is useful when requests, responsibility, and boundaries remain unclear. Help is offered without consent, needs are expected to be guessed, and a boundary becomes punishment.
The Victim position: experienced powerlessness
In this position, choice and available resources become hard to see. Yet powerlessness may be real: illness, dependency, discrimination, or abuse are not psychological games. A useful question is: what is genuinely outside my control, and where does even a small choice remain?
The Persecutor position: pressure instead of a boundary
A person tries to regain control through blame, threat, or humiliation. A healthy boundary describes one’s own action: ‘If the conversation becomes insulting, I will end it.’ Pressure tries to control the other person.
The Rescuer position: help that removes agency
The Rescuer acts before discovering whether help is wanted. Care includes consent, limits, and clear responsibility. One can ask: ‘Would you like me to listen, help you think, or do something specific?’
One person may move through all three positions; the model describes interaction dynamics, not a permanent role.
Why the roles switch quickly
Each position briefly lowers tension: powerlessness postpones a decision, rescuing creates a sense of being needed, and pressure creates an illusion of control. Resentment, shame, exhaustion, and repetition follow.
Signs of a repeating dynamic
- The same conflict repeats under different topics.
- No request is made, yet the other person is expected to solve the problem.
- Advice is given without consent and meets resistance.
- The conversation ends in exhaustion without a next step.
A six-step way out
1. Name the observable fact
‘We agreed to call at seven, but the call did not happen’ is more workable than ‘You never think about me.’
2. Identify your share of responsibility
Separate what depends on you, what belongs to the other person, and what is shaped by circumstances. Responsibility does not mean blame for everything.
3. Make a direct request
A request should be specific and allow a no. If refusal is not possible because of an obligation, the conversation is about an agreement and consequences.
4. Help with consent
Clarify the form of help and your capacity: ‘I can help with the documents until six, but I cannot manage the whole process.’
5. Turn blame into a boundary
A boundary contains a condition and your action, not a promise to punish: ‘If I am shouted at, I will end the conversation and return later.’
6. Check the outcome
Is the task clearer? Is there an agreement? Does each person retain the right to decide? If not, return to one fact and one topic.
Example: help without a request
A colleague rewrites someone else’s presentation without agreement and then feels unappreciated. The way out begins by asking what help is wanted, making a specific request, and naming the available time.

When the model must not be used
The Drama Triangle must not equalize responsibility in abuse, coercion, stalking, or exploitation. A harmed person does not become complicit because they feel powerless. Safety, support, and professional advice come first.
MriyaRun practice
- What happened without evaluation?
- What do I feel and need?
- What is my responsibility, and what belongs to the other person?
- What request or boundary will I state?
- What will I do if there is no agreement?
Dmytro Telushko’s perspective
The triangle becomes especially visible when closeness is pursued indirectly: earned through rescuing, demanded through pressure, or expected through mind-reading. Direct dialogue is more vulnerable, yet it restores choice and responsibility.

Diary of the Owner of Her Boundaries helps turn tension into facts, requests, boundaries, and concrete decisions.
Once the basic roles are clear, continue with the full anatomy of a psychological game: the hidden invitation, hook, switch, payoff, and return to the Adult position.
Once the three roles are familiar, practise a concrete exit with five phrases for clarifying a request, pausing, refusing, and taking the next action.
