Where the 50–10–40 happiness formula came from, why it should not be read literally, and what can realistically be influenced.

50% of happiness is the innate level.
The basic level of happiness is genetically embedded in us, it is similar to the tendency to fullness. Someone can eat a lot and not get fat, and someone constantly adheres to diets, as they recover very easily. Numerous studies of twins prove the existence of a basic level of happiness.
This is like our zero level, a starting point. No matter what happens in our lives, we will always return to this point after some time. For example, if a person wins a million dollars, his level of happiness will skyrocket. But for how long? After a while, he will return to his base level, even if the money is still there for him.
Or, on the contrary, if someone close to a person dies, or he goes through a difficult divorce, the level of happiness drops sharply, but after a while it returns to the starting point.
And the great human error lies precisely in this period of time. How much do we need to get back to baseline happiness? We tend to exaggerate it. Many people think that after a divorce or separation, they never recover or very soon. And others think that if they received a million dollars, a car or an apartment, they would also be happy for the rest of their lives.
On average, it takes 1 to 2 years to return to the baseline level of happiness. Whatever upheavals happen in your life, it won't last forever.
10% of happiness depends on reasons.
Whether you are rich or poor, beautiful or not, healthy or sick, these factors do not greatly affect the level of happiness. Various studies prove this information. For example, rich people who earn more than 10 million dollars a year have the same or almost the same level of happiness as the workers in their offices and factories. Those who are married are happier than those who are single, but only marginally. A study of the level of happiness, which was conducted in 16 countries, showed that 25% of married people and 21% of single people called themselves "very happy".
40% of happiness is conscious actions or acts of happiness.
The key to happiness is not in changing your genetics, nor in changing your circumstances (ie, becoming richer, more attractive, or finding friendlier colleagues), but in daily, purposeful actions. 40%, which are completely in our power. This is 40% for maneuver, for the ability to increase or decrease one's own level of happiness through active actions and a certain way of thinking.
One of these actions is meditation of consciousness. If you're ready to give meditation a try, download three free mindfulness practices. Audio meditation with voice accompaniment is the fastest way to learn how to meditate correctly.
The popular model assigns about 50% of happiness differences to genetics, 10% to circumstances, and 40% to intentional activity. It was a group-level heuristic, not an exact allocation for each person's life. It does not mean poverty, war, health, and relationships “matter only ten percent.”

Different conditions, resources, and activation levels
Heritability is not destiny
Heritability describes variation within a population and set of conditions, not an unchangeable portion of an individual.
Action has context
Habits, relationships, meaning, movement, sleep, and gratitude may support well-being, but access is unequal. Practice should not turn social or medical problems into blame for “not trying hard enough to be happy.”
Words from Dmytro Telushko
“The useful part of the formula is a reminder that action exists. The dangerous part is measuring history, body, relationships, and actual conditions in fixed percentages.”
