Anger: Understand the Signal and Choose an Action

Anger is often described as an emotion to conquer, suppress, or vent. This framing misses its work: the body mobilizes when it detects an obstacle, injustice, violated boundary, powerlessness, or a threat to something important. Emotion provides energy and direction, but it does not determine behavior.

A person can feel intense anger without humiliating, hitting, or destroying. They can also speak quietly while acting aggressively through control, contempt, or silent punishment. It helps to distinguish anger as an internal state, aggression as a way of acting, and violence as harm and coercion.

Anger gathers attention around what needs to change. The heart may accelerate, muscles tighten, the voice becomes firmer, and an impulse arises to approach, push away, stop, or regain control. In a brief situation, this mobilization can support protection and decisive action.

The signal does not always describe reality precisely. Fatigue, previous experience, expectations, and shame shape it. Anger deserves to be heard and then examined: what happened, and what needs protection?

Emotion appears without a vote. Behavior offers more room for choice, although high activation narrows it. Aggression can be direct, passive, verbal, or turned against oneself. Violence involves harm, intimidation, control, or coercion; intense feeling does not make it acceptable.

Responsibility begins with: “my anger is real, and I am responsible for my action.”

Before shouting, there may be dozens of quieter signs: a clenched jaw, heat in the face, tense hands, shallow breathing, chest pressure, an urge to interrupt, or thoughts narrowing to “always” and “never.” For another person, anger starts as coldness, distance, or numbness.

Observation does not mean calming down immediately. It restores time. At three out of ten, conversation may be available; at nine, physical distance and a later return may be safer.

Anger does not always conceal one “real” emotion. It can coexist with fear, pain, shame, jealousy, guilt, or powerlessness. Sometimes anger is the most accurate response to injustice. Elsewhere it protects vulnerability a person has not learned to show.

A useful sequence is: what happened; what reacted in the body; what emotion can I name; what story did thought add; what do I want to do; what need or value was affected?

Anger often points to a crossed boundary, but a boundary needs clarity. “Do not make me angry” assigns responsibility for one’s state to someone else. “If the conversation becomes insulting, I will stop and return when we can speak without insults” describes a condition and one’s own action.

A boundary cannot guarantee agreement. It shows what its author will do to protect time, body, privacy, money, or dignity.

The idea that emotion must be “vented” is too simple. Shouting or hitting objects may strengthen the link between activation and aggressive action. Suppression also has a cost: the signal disappears from conversation while the problem remains.

A third path is to give anger a form: name the fact, acknowledge intensity, check danger, use movement to work through excess mobilization, formulate a boundary, and choose an action proportionate to the consequences.

During an argument, speak about a specific event rather than a person’s character. “You are irresponsible” closes conversation; “we agreed on a deadline, it passed, and I received no message” leaves something concrete to answer. Impact, need, and proposal can follow.

A pause helps when participants no longer hear content. It works better with an agreement about return: when and how the conversation will continue.

“About Emotions: Anger” is Dmytro Telushko’s extensive writing workbook on emotional literacy. It explores not only major outbursts but early signals, resentment, irritation, powerlessness, shame, boundaries, and repeating patterns.

Writing creates a pause between impulse and action. An episode can be separated into event, bodily response, emotion, thought, need, and possible response. The book does not demand permanent calm; it aims to expand choice.

The Emotions Journal EQ helps reveal patterns: what situations trigger anger, how quickly it rises, and what consequences follow familiar reactions. RedLines EQ “Emotion Detector” adds practice in recognizing emotion during communication.

If anger involves loss of control, violence, fear for safety, or thoughts of harming oneself or others, writing is not enough. Professional or emergency support is appropriate to the level of risk.

The task is not to defeat anger. It is to distinguish its signal, intensity, and available actions, so emotional energy can support protection and change without destroying what a person wants to preserve.
