A goal organizes attention and turns desire into action. Trouble begins when it becomes a verdict: ‘If I do not finish, something is wrong with me.’ Revision then feels like defeat even after circumstances, needs, or costs have changed.

Expectations: reality and fantasy
At the start, we imagine both an outcome and the feeling it is meant to guarantee: recognition, calm, or safety. Reality may differ. A promotion may not create freedom, and completion may not remove doubt. Reality provides data about what works and what price is acceptable.
Reasons to revise a goal
- The original need has changed.
- The cost now outweighs the value.
- New facts have appeared.
- The route is held mainly by shame or fear of judgment.
Example: a career goal

The practical dimension
Someone pursues management and later realizes the main motive was parental recognition, while present values point toward autonomy and family time. Stepping away can be mature, while still checking whether fear of responsibility is being renamed as a value shift.
Revision or avoidance
Avoidance often reduces anxiety quickly but narrows life. Mature revision names reasons and losses, accepts consequences, and identifies the next step.
Route review
- What was the original meaning?
- What has changed?
- What is the cost of continuing and stopping?
- What has already been gained?
- What is the smallest honest next step?
