“Fairy-Tale Therapy: Inner Scripts, Old Roles, and Stories That Repeat” is a practical workbook by Dmytro Telushko for adults who want to explore their recurring life patterns with care. This workbook does not promise a quick magical transformation. It is not about becoming a completely new person after one evening of exercises. Its movement is slower and more honest: first notice the story you may have been living automatically, then recognize your role inside it, understand what that role once protected, and only after that begin to look for another way to respond.

Example: the seamstress who repaired the kingdom
The workbook introduces Marta Savenko and the tale of a small seamstress. In her kingdom, everything keeps tearing: coats, sleeves, flags, curtains, children’s blankets, the royal mantle, old sacks of grain. People rush, argue, lose buttons, pull too hard, and then call the seamstress. She comes quietly, sits by the window, repairs what has been torn, and hears: “What would we do without you?”
For one reader, this is just a scene. For another, it is a precise image of their life. It may describe a person who always reconciles the family after conflict. An employee who covers other people’s mistakes so the team can appear whole. A partner who softens every request so they will not seem demanding. From the outside, it may look like kindness or responsibility. Inside, however, exhaustion grows: “Why am I repairing what I did not tear?”
Fairy-tale therapy does not say, “Stop being the seamstress immediately.” It asks more carefully: “When did this role appear? What did it give you? Love? Safety? A sense of being needed? And what does it cost you now?” This is where an old adaptation can become visible instead of remaining the only possible way to live.
Why it works
A fairy tale speaks to more than logic. It touches memory, bodily sensations, emotions, imagination, and associations. A door can represent choice. A key can represent possibility. A forest can hold the unknown. A mask can show a role. A cup can point to the need for warmth. A single simple image may carry something that a person has not yet found words for.
That is why the method can be effective. Many people are excellent at explaining their pain, but less able to feel what is true underneath the explanation. They say, “I understand everything,” “It is fine,” “I do not want to dramatize,” or “I am just tired.” The workbook invites the reader to notice where such phrases edit the truth into a more acceptable form. Not to accuse themselves, but to ask: what do I actually feel, what do I need, and which role am I entering again?
How the workbook is structured
The first part is a 28-day route. The reader explores the stories that still remember them, their role inside the fairy tale, the first “fairy-tale truth,” and the price of the old story. It is not a speed challenge. One day may take ten minutes, or one question may stay with the reader for a week. The pace matters less than the honesty of contact.
The second part is a fairy-tale guide to scripts. It includes folk and original tales, psychological readings, self-observation questions, healthier versions of plots, and practices for finding adult choice. Here a tale is seen as a script system: who is the hero, what role repeats, where the prohibition appears, where the boundary is, what need is hidden, what benefit the old pattern once gave, and where another ending may become possible.

Until an old tale is named, it can feel like life itself. A person may think, “This is just who I am,” “I always have to endure,” “Everything will fall apart without me,” “Asking directly is unsafe,” or “Love must be earned by being convenient.” But once the story has a name, it stops being fate. The workbook may be useful for people who notice repeated patterns in relationships, work, or self-attitude: rescuing others, staying silent about needs, being convenient, waiting for permission, fearing visibility, carrying other people’s responsibility, explaining pain beautifully, or not allowing themselves to want directly.
At the same time, the workbook does not replace psychotherapy, medical care, or crisis support. If exercises bring panic, intense bodily tension, numbness, self-harm impulses, or the feeling of being pulled into painful experience, it is better to stop, return attention to the room, and seek support from a qualified professional.
